There are places where human beings are caged and cut off from society. They are called prisons, and in many states, other than a brief hour a day to shower inmates do not even glimpse other people. Ten years ago, a few inmates were offered a free book program, where anyone could write requesting a package of books. When they received the books, the mind-numbing boredom of their existence was relieved . Now the program has grown with hundreds of requests, and the volunteers are straining to continue it with private funding. Governmental prison agencies seem not to care, since the policy at present is, “Lock ’em up, and forget ‘em.” In some states the prison libraries are closed. One out of three inmates is illiterate, or barely able to read. They often do not the means to get a high school diploma.

The Anza Sanctuary of Healing Arts wants to continue this program and meet the demand, to provide reading material. Most of these inmates will be released back into society, hopefully with a love for reading, and for writing poetry, stories, descriptions of life, the lessons learned in prison. Inmates must write to receive books.
